Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the breasts, abdominal skin and abdominal wall in ways that do not always improve with weight loss or exercise. A mommy makeover is a personalized combination of procedures that can address more than one of these areas in the same overall surgical plan. There is no standard mommy makeover combination – it depends on what has changed, what matters most to you, your health, and whether the procedures can be performed safely together or are better staged.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is not one operation. It is a term used for a customized combination of breast and body procedures performed after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Most plans focus on the breasts and abdomen, although liposuction may also be used to improve the contour of the waist, flanks, back, or other selected areas. For one patient, the plan may be a breast lift and abdominoplasty. For another, it may involve breast augmentation, abdominal surgery and liposuction. Some patients may need breast reduction rather than augmentation. The goal is to choose only the procedures that address your anatomy and priorities, rather than fitting you into a standard package.
What Changes Can a Mommy Makeover Address?
The changes after pregnancy are different for every patient. A mommy makeover may be considered when more than one area is contributing to your concerns.
- Breast volume loss or a deflated appearance after pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Breast sagging, a lower nipple position, stretched areolae, asymmetry, or persistent breast heaviness.
- Loose or deflated abdominal skin that remains after your weight has stabilized.
- Separation or stretching of the abdominal wall, often called diastasis recti, when it contributes to abdominal prominence.
- Localized fullness around the abdomen, waist, flanks, or back that may be improved with liposuction.
- Stretch marks within skin that may be removed as part of an abdominoplasty. Stretch marks outside the skin being removed will remain.
Which Procedures Can Be Part of a Mommy Makeover?
Breast surgery
Breast changes after pregnancy are not all the same. Some patients mainly need a breast lift to reshape and elevate the breast. Others want to restore volume with breast augmentation. If the breasts remain larger or heavier than desired, breast reduction may be more appropriate. In some cases, a lift and augmentation are combined.
Abdominal surgery
When loose skin or abdominal-wall stretching is the main concern, the abdominal part of the plan may involve a full abdominoplasty or, in selected patients, a mini abdominoplasty. A full abdominoplasty treats a broader area of the abdomen and may include repair of abdominal-wall separation. A mini procedure is more limited and is only appropriate when the concern is mainly below the belly button.
Liposuction
Liposuction may be added when localized fat affects the overall contour of the abdomen, waist, flanks, back, or another selected area. It does not replace an abdominoplasty when the main issue is loose skin or abdominal-wall laxity.
When Is a Mommy Makeover a Good Option?
A mommy makeover is generally considered after your planned pregnancies and breastfeeding are complete and your weight has reached a range that is stable and realistic for you to maintain.
You may be a good candidate when you are in good general health, do not use nicotine or can stop as directed before and after surgery, understand that scars and a meaningful recovery are part of the process, and have reliable help at home.
The support piece matters. Early after combined breast and abdominal surgery, you may not be able to lift children, manage normal household tasks, or drive. Planning who will help with childcare, meals, transportation and day-to-day tasks is part of planning the operation.
Another approach may be more appropriate if you are planning another pregnancy soon, your weight is still changing significantly, one focused procedure would address your main concern, or the combined operation would be more than is reasonable to do safely at one time.
How Do We Decide Whether to Combine or Stage Surgery?
One of the most important decisions in a mommy makeover is not simply which procedures to perform, but whether they should be done together.
Combining breast and abdominal procedures can consolidate recovery into one period. It also creates a longer operation and a more demanding early recovery. Dr. Ho considers your health, the procedures being discussed, previous surgery, the overall length and scope of the operation, and the help you will have at home.
For some patients, a combined operation is reasonable. For others, separating procedures into stages is the safer or more manageable choice. The goal is not to fit as much surgery as possible into one day. It is to create the plan that makes sense for you.
What Is Recovery Like After a Mommy Makeover?
Recovery after a mommy makeover is usually more involved than recovery from one limited procedure because both the breasts and abdomen may be healing at the same time. Swelling, bruising, tightness, soreness, fatigue and temporary numbness can occur, and it can take time before movement feels normal again.
Mommy makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia at a private surgical facility. For Dr. Ho’s combined breast and abdominal surgery, an overnight stay is required. A surgical bra and abdominal compression garment are generally worn during the early recovery period. Drains are often used after abdominal surgery and may remain for approximately 5–12 days, depending on your healing and drain output.
Light walking starts early. Heavy lifting, lifting children and strenuous exercise are avoided for at least four weeks or until Dr. Ho clears you. Many patients make substantial progress during the first 2–6 weeks, but when possible Dr. Ho recommends allowing about six weeks away from major work or social commitments for combined surgery.
Your exact timeline depends on the procedures performed, the physical demands of your work, the age of your children, and how your recovery progresses. Dr. Ho’s postoperative instructions should take priority over a general online timeline.
What Scars Should You Expect?
A mommy makeover does leave permanent scars, and the location depends on the procedures included. Breast scars may be around the areola, extend vertically down the breast, or include a scar along the breast fold. Abdominoplasty usually leaves a low horizontal abdominal scar and, with a full tummy tuck, a scar around the belly button. Liposuction leaves small access scars.
Scars are usually more noticeable early in healing and continue to mature over the first year. Dr. Ho will review scar care during follow-up. If stretch marks are one of your concerns, only those located within abdominal skin that is actually removed can be removed with the surgery.
Risks and Safety Considerations
Every operation carries risk, and combining procedures increases the amount of surgery and the physical demands of recovery. Potential complications may include bleeding, infection, fluid collections such as seroma, delayed wound healing, changes in sensation, asymmetry or contour irregularity, problems with scars, blood clots, and anesthesia-related complications. Breast implants carry additional implant-specific risks when they are part of the plan.
These risks are not the same for every patient. Your medical history, nicotine use, medications, previous surgery, and the number and length of procedures all matter. Dr. Ho will review the risks that apply to your specific plan and may recommend staging if that is the safer approach.
Dr. Ho’s Approach to Mommy Makeover Surgery
Dr. Adelyn Ho is a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon with additional fellowship training in microsurgery and a practice focus that includes breast reconstruction, aesthetic breast surgery and body contouring. Her training allows her to look at the breast and abdominal plan together rather than treating each area in isolation.
As a female plastic surgeon and mother of two, Dr. Ho also understands that the practical side of recovery matters. Childcare, work, home responsibilities and the amount of support available after surgery are part of the surgical plan, not an afterthought.
A consultation is used to determine which changes are actually surgical, which procedures would meaningfully address them, and whether the safest plan is one combined operation or staged treatment.
Mommy Makeover FAQs
What procedures are included in a mommy makeover?
There is no standard package. A mommy makeover may include a breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, abdominoplasty or mini abdominoplasty, and liposuction. The combination depends on your anatomy and priorities.
Does a mommy makeover always include a tummy tuck and breast implants?
No. Some patients need a tummy tuck but not an implant. Others may benefit from a breast lift or breast reduction instead of augmentation. The purpose of the consultation is to determine which procedures actually address your concerns.
Can all of the procedures be done at the same time?
Sometimes. A combined operation can consolidate recovery, but it also increases the length and scope of surgery. Dr. Ho may recommend staging based on your health, the procedures being considered, previous surgery, and the practical demands of recovery.
When is the best time to have a mommy makeover?
It is generally best after your planned pregnancies and breastfeeding are complete and your weight is stable. Another pregnancy or major weight change can stretch the tissues again and change the result.
How long is recovery, and will I need help with my children?
Recovery varies with the procedures performed. Many patients make substantial progress during the first 2–6 weeks, and Dr. Ho recommends allowing about six weeks away from major commitments when possible for combined surgery. You will need reliable adult help because lifting children, driving and strenuous activity are restricted early in recovery.
Can a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?
It can remove stretch marks that are located within the abdominal skin being removed. Stretch marks outside that area will remain, although their position may change when the skin is tightened.
How do I choose a surgeon for a mommy makeover?
Look for a properly certified plastic surgeon who regularly performs both breast and abdominal surgery, can explain whether your procedures should be combined or staged, operates in an appropriate surgical facility, provides clear postoperative follow-up, and can show before-and-after cases that are relevant to the procedures you are considering. Dr. Ho is certified in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
How much does a mommy makeover cost in Vancouver?
The cost varies because a mommy makeover is not one standard operation. Your fee depends on the procedures included and the surgical plan. A personalized quote is provided after consultation. Eligible patients can also explore monthly financing through Beautifi.
Considering Mommy Makeover in Vancouver?
A mommy makeover starts with deciding what actually needs to be treated, not with choosing a package. During your consultation, Dr. Ho will assess the breasts, abdominal skin and abdominal wall, areas of localized fat, previous scars, your health and future pregnancy plans, and the support you will have during recovery. From there, she can recommend whether a combined or staged approach makes the most sense.
